Sustainability
McGraw-Hill Ryerson actively pursues initiatives to minimize our environmental footprint through energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling and procurement. We are committed to sound procurement practices to ensure the sustainability of forests and other natural resources used in the production of our products.
Our Green Earth Committee, staffed entirely by volunteers, follows a mandate to make sound environmental decisions in our products, processes and physical infrastructure. We continue to make improvements in minimizing the energy we consume and the recycling programs in our operations.
A note on our paper procurement practices:
The majority of paper used by McGraw-Hill Ryerson in the manufacturing of our print product comes from chain of custody, third party certified, well-managed forests. We regularly review our paper suppliers and their compliance with environmental laws and we work with them to maximize the percentage of fiber that comes from certified, well managed forests. We give preference to suppliers who have clear policies in place regarding illegal logging and forest habitat of special concern (i.e. old growth, sensitive wildlife habitat). Wherever readily available and economically viable, we use paper products with recycled content. We communicate to our suppliers our interest in the further development of commercially viable new grades of paper that include recycled post-consumer fibers. We also encourage the efficient use and conservation of raw materials. We require a copy of the Environmental Policy of all paper companies supplying paper the McGraw-Hill Companies and conduct on-going reviews of these policies through the McGraw-Hill Companies Environmental Paper Compliance Survey. McGraw-Hill Ryerson partners with the United Way Durham Region to provide a cohesive and coordinated effort in reaching those people in our community who are disadvantaged. We support and applaud the United Way’s commitment to ensure that “every cent is well spent” through identifying priorities, securing funding, and assessing the effectiveness of each program. The United Way is the cornerstone of our corporate and staff gift-giving to help those in our community who are in need.
