Glossary

The Fourth Canadian edition of Adler introduces criminology in a clear and practical way to bring the material to life for students. Adler examines the behaviors labelled as criminal within the broader social, economic, political, and cultural frameworks in which they take place while also emphasizing how our perception of crime is influenced by a variety of factors. The Fourth Canadian edition features several updates, including a new chapter on Cybercrime. Expanded Indigenous content is also included throughout the resource to provide critical discussion of current issues relating to Indigenous peoples. The new edition also features the latest Canadian research and examples in every chapter, ensuring the material is relevant for today’s student. The Fourth Canadian edition of Adler is available in Connect. Connect is an award-winning digital teaching and learning solution designed to enhance your teaching style. It allows you to deliver, personalize and measure your course with ease. Plus, Connect can integrate with your LMS system to provide a seamless experience for you and your students.

New Chapter on Cybercrime. This new chapter discusses cybercrime with a focus on criminal hacking. This is a relatively new area of criminology with wide-ranging global implications regarding how these crimes are investigated. This chapter also explores the complexity behind how such crimes are prosecuted internationally.

Indigenous Perspectives. New Indigenous Perspective boxes provide critical discussion of current issues relating to Indigenous peoples, highlighting connections to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and decolonization.

Diversity Matters. New Diversity Matters boxes use a critical lens to highlight current international and local research that examines topics and perspectives outside the mainstream, drawing attention to diverse perspectives and groups.

New Canadian co-author. Ajay Sandhu is an Associate Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University. His research focuses on digital technologies and their impact on criminality, crime control, and public knowledge about crime control. Ajay teaches a variety of criminology courses at Toronto Metropolitan University, including Cyber Criminology, Criminology Theory, and a graduate course titled Crime and Technology.

New Application-Based Activities. Two new Application-Based Activities on Criminological Theory and Cybercrime are available in Connect with the Fourth Canadian edition of Adler. These highly interactive, assignable exercises boost engagement and provide a safe space to apply concepts learned to real-world, course¿specific problems.

Polling.Uncover where and when you’re needed with the new Polling tool in McGraw Hill Connect. Polling allows instructors to discover where students are in real time. Engage students and help them create connections with course content while gaining valuable insight during lectures. Leverage polling data to deliver personalized instruction when and where it is needed most.

Canadian Research and Examples. Canadian research and examples are integrated throughout to add relevancy to the content.

Relevancy for students. Criminology serves as a resource that will help students understand the connection between criminological theory and the crimes and issues they apply to. Instead of keeping crimes and theories separate, Adler integrates the two to maintain relevancy.

A Variety of Pedagogical Aids. Many innovative features are weaved throughout the resource to highlight criminologically significant issues, and help students see the relevance of criminology in their lives. Examples include Theory Informs Policy boxes and Critical Thinking Questions.
