About the Author

Danica Lavoie
Danica Lavoie left Dalhousie, a small town in northern New Brunswick to attend Humber College in Toronto (population then 2 million). It was there that she encountered some remarkable professors—Michael Hatton, Pam Hanft, and Wayson Choy—who inspired her and encouraged her to continue her studies. She went on to complete an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Waterloo; a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business; and, later on, obtained a Teacher of Adults Certificate from Centennial College. While studying for her MBA, Professor Lavoie was offered the opportunity by one of her former professors to teach part time at Humber College. Though she was only 22 at the time, it was this teaching experience that many years later motivated her to return to the classroom after a successful career in banking and as an entrepreneur. She has never regretted moving from her lucrative business career into teaching, noting that every semester is different, and every day brings a chance to make a difference in a student’s life.
