What to expect
Higher education is a path to a better life, and we hope that students will persist and graduate. But what happens when students are coping with trauma and mental health issues during their studies? Recent research shows that resilience factors like grit and perseverance should be encouraged in college and university students, even those who have experienced significant adversity. Teaching resilience can help buffer students from vulnerabilities and promote academic achievement.

Brad’s resilience has been tested with the loss of his two sons; his body ravaged by disease; his life spared during death-defying adventures. He’s learned that resilience is essential to living an intentional, grateful life, choosing how to respond to gut-wrenching life events - how he decides which of two drowning students to save; plunges down a mountain on the toe of an avalanche while teaching a backcountry ski class; receives the verdict: “You’ve been diagnosed with cancer, again”.
During Brad’s 46 years in his privileged position of teaching and coaching on campus, he’s been inducted into the ‘Teaching Excellence’ Hall of Fame; awarded Canadian University Volleyball ‘Coach of the Year’; Gold Medal recipient at the Banff International Film Festival. You’ll find Brad not only entertaining, but inspiring as he encourages you to explore and discover how to use resilience as our ally - the gift that shines a spotlight on our biggest opportunities for growth!
