Child Development: An Introduction

Expanding the Canadian Context. The Third Canadian edition expands the Canadian context in child development through new research and content. Canadian research and considerations are included, as well as coverage of topics like neuroscience and neurodiversity; neurobiology, emotion, and cognition; cultural factors, mental health, and wellness, including expanded coverage of international research; biological factors and their interaction with environments and experiences; gender similarities and differences, including gender identity; digital technology; and family socioeconomic and demographic factors.

Chapter Organization. To better reflect Santrock’s focus on culture, diversity and mental health, the content that was formerly covered in Chapter 14 has moved. Culture, Diversity, and Mental Health is now included in Chapter 2.

Updates to Every Chapter. Every chapter of the Third Canadian edition has been updated with current research and statistics, ensuring the material is relevant for students.

The Critical Thinking Assignment. The Critical Thinking Assignment is an active reading and critical thinking tool that helps guide students through the process of critical reading and analysis before, during, and after reading. Critical Thinking Assignment provides students the opportunity to read real-world texts analytically and critically by guiding them through the thinking required for deep understanding. Instructors can build assignments that ask students to complete tasks such as reflecting on a text, responding to a text, analyzing a piece of writing, or evaluating a source. Instructors can choose from a library of carefully chosen documents, upload their own documents, or assign students to upload their own documents.

Topical Organization. Santrock Child Development is topically organized. Some of the topics/chapters that are covered include Intelligence, The Self and Identity, and Culture, Diversity and Mental Health.

Learning Goals System. The Learning Goals system in Child Development provides extensive learning connections throughout the chapters. The learning system connects the chapter-opening outline, learning goals for the chapter, mini-chapter outlines that open each main section of the chapter, Review, Connect, and Reflect at the end of each main section, and the chapter summary at the end of each chapter.

Canadian Content. Coverage of Canadian research, statistics, and examples are integrated throughout the text.

Diversity and Inclusion. Child Development puts a strong emphasis on diversity. With diversity integrated throughout the resource. Milestone Application-Based Activities. At the higher end of Bloom’s Taxonomy (analyze, evaluate, create), the Milestone video series is an observational tool that allows students to experience life as it unfolds, from infancy to emerging adulthood. Located in Connect, this ground-breaking, longitudinal video series tracks the development of real children as they progress through the early stages of physical, social, and emotional development in their first few weeks, months, and years of life. Milestones also includes interviews with adolescents and adults to reflect development throughout the entire life span.
