Updates to Every Chapter. Every chapter of the Third Canadian edition has been updated with current research and statistics, ensuring the material is relevant for students.
The Critical Thinking Assignment. The Critical Thinking Assignment is an active reading and critical thinking tool that helps guide students through the process of critical reading and analysis before, during, and after reading. Critical Thinking Assignment provides students the opportunity to read real-world texts analytically and critically by guiding them through the thinking required for deep understanding. Instructors can build assignments that ask students to complete tasks such as reflecting on a text, responding to a text, analyzing a piece of writing, or evaluating a source. Instructors can choose from a library of carefully chosen documents, upload their own documents, or assign students to upload their own documents.
Topical Organization. Santrock Child Development is topically organized. Some of the topics/chapters that are covered include Intelligence, The Self and Identity, and Culture, Diversity and Mental Health.
Learning Goals System. The Learning Goals system in Child Development provides extensive learning connections throughout the chapters. The learning system connects the chapter-opening outline, learning goals for the chapter, mini-chapter outlines that open each main section of the chapter, Review, Connect, and Reflect at the end of each main section, and the chapter summary at the end of each chapter.
Canadian Content. Coverage of Canadian research, statistics, and examples are integrated throughout the text.
Diversity and Inclusion. Child Development puts a strong emphasis on diversity. With diversity integrated throughout the resource. Further, a feature called Connecting with Diversity appears throughout the text, focusing on a diversity topic related to the material at that point in the chapter. Topics range from“ Cultural Variations in Guiding Infants’ Motor Development” to “The Contexts of Ethnic Identity Development.”
Connect. The Third Canadian edition of Child Development is available in Connect. Connect is McGraw Hill’s award-winning digital teaching and learning solution designed to enhance your teaching style. It allows you to deliver, personalize and measure your course with ease. Plus, Connect can integrate with your LMS system to provide a seamless experience for you and your students
SmartBook. Within Connect, students have access to SmartBook, an adaptive learning and reading tool that personalizes content to each student’s unique needs. Because SmartBook creates the ideal study path for each student, every minute they spend studying is the most effective minute possible. SmartBook highlights the key topics students should focus on, and supplies links to additional learning materials like slideshows, videos and more so they can enhance their understanding of key learning objectives.
Quest. Located within McGraw Hill’s Connect platform, Quest is an engaging and innovative learning game that provides students with opportunities to apply content to real-life scenarios. Students play unique characters who range in age and make decisions that apply key concepts and theories for each age as they negotiate events in various authentic environments. Additionally, as students analyze real-world behaviours and contexts, they are exposed to different cultures and intersecting biological, cognitive, and socioemotional processes. Each quest has layered re-playability, allowing students to make new choices each time they play—or offering different students in the same class different experiences. Fresh possibilities and outcomes shine light on the complexity of and variations in real human development. This experiential learning game includes follow-up questions, assignable in Connect and auto-graded, to reach a higher level of critical thinking.
Milestone Application-Based Activities. At the higher end of Bloom’s Taxonomy (analyze, evaluate, create), the Milestone video series is an observational tool that allows students to experience life as it unfolds, from infancy to emerging adulthood. Located in Connect, this ground-breaking, longitudinal video series tracks the development of real children as they progress through the early stages of physical, social, and emotional development in their first few weeks, months, and years of life. Milestones also includes interviews with adolescents and adults to reflect development throughout the entire life span.
