Expanded Research from Quebec. New to this edition is an improved focus with respect to the Quebec curriculum that stipulates that introduction to psychology courses examine "questions or examples based on Quebec realities or emphasizes the development and influence of the discipline in a Quebec context" (Ministere de l'Enseignement superieur, 2021). This edition includes research from Quebec and has highlighted Quebec researchers.
New Canadian Co-Authors. The Eighth Canadian edition includes two new co-authors: Michelle M. Arnold from Okanagan College and Jennifer Rocchi from John Abbott College.
Expanded Coverage of Indigenous Content. The Eighth Canadian edition includes new and updated Indigenous Perspective and Lived Experience: Indigenous Voices feature boxes. One example includes a new Lived Experience feature in Chapter 9 on Dwayne Stacey, an educator from Kahnawake, Québec, and a member of the Mohawk community, looking at Indigenous views of child development and learning

Critical Thinking Assignment. Located in Connect, the Critical Thinking Assignment is an active reading and critical thinking tool that helps guide students through the process of critical reading and analysis before, during, and after reading. Critical Thinking Assignment provides students the opportunity to read real-world texts analytically and critically by guiding them through the thinking required for deep understanding. Instructors can build assignments that ask students to complete tasks such as reflecting on a text, responding to a text, analyzing a piece of writing, or evaluating a source. Instructors can choose from a library of carefully chosen documents, upload their own documents, or assign students to upload their own documents.
Polling. Uncover where and when you’re needed with the new Polling tool in McGraw Hill Connect. Polling allows instructors to discover where students are in real time. Engage students and help them create connections with course content while gaining valuable insight during lectures. Leverage polling data to deliver personalized instruction when and where it is needed most.
Student-First Approach. Essentials of Understanding Psychology puts students first by connecting psychology to everyday life. It aims to inform, engage and excite students to help them understand and retain psychological concepts.
Modular Chapter Format. Feldman is structured into 14 chapters, each divided into short modules, allowing students to study in smaller, more manageable chunks. This modular format enables instructors to customize assignments, focusing on depth or breadth as needed for their specific course requirements. The flexibility of this approach makes it particularly useful for teaching psychology to non-psychology majors across various programs, as instructors can tailor the content to match the background and interests of each discipline.
Indigenous Perspectives. In signing the Indigenous Education Protocol, colleges and other post-secondary institutions across Canada have pledged to support the inclusion of Indigenous intellectual and cultural traditions into their academic curriculum. Indigenous Perspective boxes present Indigenous knowledge on core introductory psychology topics, including states of consciousness, human development, and social psychology. In addition, Lived Experience: Indigenous Voices boxes provide first person experiences from Canada’s Indigenous Community as they relate to key psychological concepts.
Diversity and Inclusion. Feldman offers substantial coverage of material relevant to diversity throughout, as well as sections devoted to an aspect of racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural diversity. Examples of topics highlighted in these boxes include cultural influences on learning (Chapter 5) and cross-cultural differences in expression of emotion (Chapter 8). These sections highlight the way in which psychology informs (and is informed by) issues relating to the increasing multiculturalism of our global society.
